Today’s Action: Tell Congress to pass the Keep Americans Safe Act

On October 1, 2017, a gunman opened fire at the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas strip, killing 58 people and wounding nearly 700. The shooter was able to commit the deadliest mass shooting in American history by using semi-automatic rifles with high-capacity magazines.

Shortly after the shooting, the Keep Americans Safe Act was introduced in Congress, banning magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds from civilian use. With our gun control conversation unfortunately still in progress, it has been reintroduced for this Congress.

Call or email your Members of Congress and tell them to cosponsor the Keep Americans Safe Act (H.R.1186/S.447). The bill currently does not apply to retired or off-duty cops, so whether or not your reps have already cosponsored, call on them to create and support an addendum removing this exception.

To be blunt, we’re not sure we need to say much more to convince you that gun reform is vitally necessary. So instead of giving you more facts, we’ll say this instead: do not give up.

Gun reform can feel like an immovable wall, when in reality we have made significant strides in recent years: twelve new states adding red flag laws and eleven making it harder for domestic abusers to buy guns; Walmart discontinuing assault-weapon ammunition and open carry; Democratic presidential candidate platforms including executive action, assault-weapon bans, and buyback programs; and more…

So, keep making the phone calls for gun safety reform, even when it feels like you’ve already made the call one hundred times. Things are changing, and they’re changing thanks to the diligence and tenacity of voters who refuse to allow gun violence to be normal.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and tell them to cosponsor the Keep Americans Safe Act (H.R.1186/S.447), banning high capacity magazines from civilian use. And, tell them to remove the exception for retired and off-duty cops – there’s no reason for any cop to have access to these murderous weapons.
