Today’s Action: Lift sanctions on Iran during coronavirus

Outside of China, Italy and Iran have been most impacted so far by COVID-19. And of these countries, one (you may recall from January’s headlines) has been struggling under devastating anti-Obama-legacy sanctions from Trump the past two years: Iran.

Trump has stoked war with Iran from the moment he took office. He first blocked travel with his Muslim Ban, then broke Obama’s heralded Iran nuclear deal to impose crippling sanctions on Iran’s economy in May 2018, deeply hurting Iranian citizens in the process.

More than 18,000 Iranians have been confirmed with COVID-19 and nearly 1,300 have died. These numbers rise exponentially every day. It’s time to lift our unnecessary sanctions, and get Iranian citizens the supplies they need to beat this virus and recover quickly.

Call or email your Members of Congress and urge them to speak out against Trump’s sanctions on Iran – he needs to drop them now, to get Iran the lifesaving supplies they need to combat COVID-19.

According to Iran’s Minister of Foreign Affairs in a letter to the United Nations, U.S. sanctions are now making it “virtually impossible” for Iran to import medicine and medical equipment or export oil to trade for basic needs like food. The same sanctions have also caused thousands of Iranians to be stranded around the world (independent of those stranded due to the Trump’s Muslim travel ban) and blocked information sharing about the virus itself.

US sanctions aren’t the only reason coronavirus has spread so quickly in Iran – part of that blame certainly rests on Iranian leaders who (like Trump) initially responded to the crisis by denying it. But Trump’s sanctions were wholly unnecessary and warmongering from the start. And now, they are specifically aiding and abetting COVID-19 as it sweeps Iran.

In the 1990’s, similar US sanctions on Iraq killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children. Are we prepared to participate in a repeat of history now?

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and ask them to push for the release of sanctions against Iran during the coronavirus pandemic. Iranians citizens deserve access to basic needs and medical supplies to fight this global health crisis.
