Today’s Action: A real financial stimulus (regardless of immigration status)
If it wasn’t apparent before (it definitely was), a one-time $1,200 stimulus check isn’t nearly enough to cover basic needs for millions of out-of-work and extra-burdened Americans during the coronavirus crisis. Nearly one-third of all renters failed to meet rent on April 1st and 22 million workers are now unemployed. Meanwhile, about 60 million people are still waiting for their one-time stimulus, and rent is due again next week.
Some Democrats in Congress are floating a more viable financial package: $2,000 per month for each adult, regardless of immigration status. We don’t know how much longer millions will struggle to find employment and we need a package that carries us through this crisis long-term
Call or email your Members of Congress and demand a direct financial stimulus of $2,000 per month per adult, regardless of immigration status. Then, call your governor and ask them to follow California’s lead by committing additional funding to assisting the undocumented immigrants who contribute to your state’s economy.
The $1,200 stimulus check went only to those with a social security number – meaning millions of legal, tax-paying immigrants did not receive support, despite their incredible contributions to our country. Even Americans citizens married to people without a SSN have been denied a stimulus check. And undocumented immigrants who contribute immensly to our economy and pay taxes were definitely left out. Without their contributions under normal circumstances, we would see an economic recession.
We are facing economic turmoil unlike anything we’ve seen in our lifetimes. To morally and economically survive as a country, we must include ALL residents in any economic stimulus, no matter their immigration status.
Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and tell them that we need direct monthly cash assistance of $2,000 per adult, regardless of immigration status. Next, call your governor and ask them to provide additional resources like California has done to help undocumented immigrants in your state.
