Yesterday, as expected, the Senate acquitted Donald Trump following a cover-up masquerading as an impeachment trial. Yet for the first time in US history, a member of the president’s party voted to convict, and for the first time in US history, the opposition remained united. Make no mistake, this was the most profound bipartisan rebuke of a president in US history, and it didn’t happen by chance. Your work is making a difference, so keep it up. Keep calling, keep showing up, keep signing petitions, and keep fighting the good fight!

photo“Long ago, there was a noble word, liberal, which derives from the word free. Now a strange thing happened to that word. A man named Hitler made it a term of abuse, a matter of suspicion, because those who were not with him were against him, and liberals had no use for Hitler. And then another man named McCarthy cast the same opprobrium on the word … We must cherish and honor the word free or it will cease to apply to us.” — Eleanor Roosevelt.

Today’s Action: Demand Trump release funds to Puerto Rico

Fresh off of getting impeached for withholding Congressionally-approved funds to Ukraine, he’s literally doing it again with Puerto Rico…which, as most of us know, is actually part of the United States, making the whole thing even more egregious and perfectly consistent with his ongoing, racist dismissal of the U.S. territory.

The 2017 hurricane season devastated Puerto Rico, with a death toll of nearly 5,000 and $100 billion in damages. But Trump’s response was sluggish and minimal – and though $43 billion in emergency funding was allocated to the island, only $14 billion has been distributed two years later.

Now, as over 1,000 earthquakes have rocked the island since December, the already-unstable and unrepaired infrastructure has crippled daily life for millions.

Call or email your Members of the Congress and demand they speak out for the release of Puerto Rico’s congressionally-appropriated emergency aid – currently being withheld or restricted by Trump.

Out of power for months at a time. Afraid of living in their own homes for fear of collapse. The earthquakes are expected to continue, causing further damage to an already damaged landscape.

But Puerto Ricans, despite being U.S. citizens, have no voting representation in Congress and are not allowed to vote in federal elections. They have no ability to vote out Trump – and will continue to be ignored except while he imposes new restrictions on the funding, including a block against allowing it to be used to repair the electric grid.

Trump’s overt white-supremacist attitude towards Puerto Rico must be countered by Congress, who approved the funding years ago.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and ask them to speak out for Puerto Ricans, who lack their own voting representation, in the face of the recent earthquakes. Trump’s restriction and limitations on emergency funding when it’s needed most is nothing more than sheer racism.
