Today’s Action: Demand Trump fully implement the Defense Production Act

About 95% of the U.S. population is currently under stay-at-home orders from their governor. And that’s a good thing – because isolation is the best way for each of us to combat the COVID-19 crisis.

But not everyone can stop working. Our frontline workers are keeping the country moving with essential services: medical professionals in the hospitals, nursing home caretakers, emergency responders, bus drivers, grocery store employees and food delivery workers, and more.

These workers need basic personal protective equipment (PPE), and right now, supplies have failed to come close to meeting demand. Trump has the ability to order the private sector to manufacture the needed supplies with the Defense Production Act (DPA) …but so far, he’s catastrophically under-utilizing it, even as the federal stockpile is dwindling.

Call or email your Members of Congress and urge them to demand Trump fully invoke the Defense Production Act to manufacture personal protective equipment for frontline workers. And if you or a member of your family are a frontline worker and personally experiencing the supply shortage, write a letter to your newspaper editor.

With the federal government unable to supply PPE’s, and Trump thus far unwilling to use the full power and efficiency of the DPA, states have been thrown into bidding wars against each other and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), sending the prices of supplies soaring and making the supply chain unpredictable.

Meanwhile, the states receiving supplies seem to be those that are strategically important to Trump this November. Florida (and its Republican Governor) has received nearly all of its requests for supplies, while blue states with bigger outbreaks like New York and Massachusetts have received small percentages of their needs.

COVID-19 has so far hit Democratic-leaning metropolitan areas hardest, and POC communities more than white communities due to the structural inequalities and racism in our healthcare system now on full display. But the virus itself is not political and all victims are equal. Trump needs to immediately use the DPA to its full capacity to save the lives not only of the patients, but those workers leaving their homes every day.

Email or call your Members of Congress and demand they call upon Trump to use the Defense Production Act to its fullest ability to manufacture personal protective equipment for frontline workers. And if you’re personally seeing the effects of these shortages, send a letter to your local newspaper.
