Today’s Action: Push the Senate to make the Coronavirus bill better

The House has passed a COVID-19 (coronavirus) relief bill, which has now gone onto the Senate. It’s a good bill with food assistance, unemployment insurance, and free coronavirus testing that passed with only 40 Republicans against it, and we definitely want to move rapidly through the upper house and into action. But although one goal must be to protect it from the Republican attacks headed its way, a second goal is to improve it further.

The bill covers two weeks of paid sick leave for workers and three months of family and medical leave – but only for employees at businesses with fewer than 500 employees or more than 50. This leaves potentially 20 million workers at businesses either larger or smaller than these numbers without paid sick leave.

It’s also missing a key resource for controlling pandemics: allowing workers to stay home and self-isolate. We must push the Senate for this, for the sake of millions of low-income workers choosing between income and risking the spread of the virus further.

Call or email your Senators and ask them to support the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, but a) remove ALL exceptions for exempting certain workers from paid sick leave and b) include the ability for workers to stay home and self-isolate.

We absolutely want this bill to pass and get support out to millions of Americans as quickly as possible. But for 20 million employees – and countless more contract, gig-based, and self-employed workers who are suddenly out of work with no protections at all – this bill unfortunately doesn’t go far enough.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a crisis perhaps unlike anything we’ve experienced in our lifetimes. This is not the time for Republicans to choose big business buddies over thousands of lives, millions of livelihoods.

Make the phone call. And then – and we cannot stress this enough – please do your part to self-isolate, as much as your employer or financial situation allows. It will take individual action from each of us, choosing to stay at home whenever possible, to keep this tragedy to a minimum.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators and urge them to support the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. But also ask them to a) provide ALL workers paid sick leave (no exceptions) and b) secure for workers the protected ability to stay at home and self-isolate.
