Today’s Action: Protect coverage for Americans with pre-existing conditions
Republicans have taken the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to court in their umpteenth attempt to destroy Obama’s legacy legislation which provides millions of Americans access to affordable healthcare. And although the current administration is supposed to be the automatic defendant of all lawsuits against it, Trump has refused to support the law.
A lower court has ruled in favor of the GOP, and if upheld, 20 million Americans will lose their healthcare access immediately. Texas vs United States now moves on to an appellate court as those with pre-existing conditions, those who depend on life-saving drugs, and all who need the ACA to access essential routine healthcare wait for the outcome.
In the case of a disastrous outcome, Democrats in Congress are already planning to keep quality healthcare intact with several key pieces of legislation.
Call or email your Senators and tell them to support and pass S.466 (Protecting Americans with Pre-Existing Conditions Act of 2019) and H.R.987 (Strengthening Healthcare and Lowering Prescription Drug Costs Act).
Last year, Trump began allowing ACA funding to be used for substandard temporary junk plans. Consumers accustomed to the protections the ACA has afforded the past decade can now be tricked into purchasing coverage that is anything but: no pre-existing conditions, no maternity, mental health, or hospital care, and no protections for the costs of major illnesses like cancer. The result: devastating healthcare bills. S.466 would restore the consumer-friendly protections of Obama’s ACA.
Meanwhile, H.R.987 boosts and restores the many cuts Trump has made to the ACA and creates a national reinsurance program to protect Americans from unexpected high medical bills – which would lower premiums for all.
Both bills are huge steps in the right direction, not only in restoring the ACA from Republican destruction, but expanding its benefits further than ever before.
Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators and demand their support for S.466 and H.R.987. Tell them quality healthcare for all Americans should be a right, not a privilege.
