Today’s Action: Demand an independent investigation for Puerto Rico
4,645.
That’s the estimate of how many Puerto Ricans have died to date as a result of Hurricane Maria last September, according to a new Harvard study which found lack of medical care to be the primary factor in the high mortality rate.
4,645 American citizens lost. But President Trump’s official count? 64.
Rep. Nydia Velázquez (D-NY) believes that Trump Administration’s artificially (and intentionally) low death toll directly caused sluggish responses and outright neglect by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and other federal support groups — so she’s calling for an independent commission to investigate.
An investigation shouldn’t have much trouble digging up the evidence. After Hurricane Harvey, which hit Houston a month before Maria hit Puerto Rico, Trump’s relative indifference is extremely well-documented. Just a few of the many examples:
- By Day 6 of Hurricane Harvey, U.S. Northern Command had deployed 73 helicopters over Houston, critical for saving victims and delivering supplies. It took three weeks for Puerto Rico to get a similar number of helicopters.
- By Day 9 of each hurricane, FEMA approved $141.8 million in individual assistance to Harvey victims, versus a mere $6.2 million for Maria victims.
- Trump himself visited Houston twice in the first 8 days…but didn’t make it to Puerto Rico until Day 13.
- And don’t get us started his effing tweet ratio.
Puerto Ricans have faced nine months of disregard and victim-blaming by their own president. Now, as the island enters a new hurricane season while still struggling to rebuild from the last, they need our strong support — speaking up and demanding answers.
Email or call (202.224.3121) your representatives and demand they support Rep. Velázquez’s call for an independent commission to investigate Trump’s response to Hurricane Maria. And soon – because the death toll is still rising.
