Today’s Action: Tell your reps to disassociate from police unions and give away any donations

All elected officials rely on the donations to get into and stay in office. And having accepted that money, reps are then beholden to their donors to enact policy that supports the donors’ political angle. We’ve seen it very clearly with the NRA, which leans heavily into donations to Republicans, who in turn attempt to block every attempt at gun safety reform.

Police unions and law enforcement PACs contribute heavily to election campaigns, and the distribution between Democrats and Republicans is evenly-spread.

And, the most hefty donations often appear where leadership ought to be the most discerning. For example, the Democratic co-chair of the House Law Enforcement Caucus is New Jersey Rep. Bill Pascrell…and he has received over $43,000 from police unions and law enforcement PACs since 2004.

Call, email, and/or tweet at your Members of Congress, state legislators, and local leadership (incl. city councils, aldermen, etc.) and demand they all divest from police unions and law enforcement PACs immediately by donating that support to protester bail funds and community-driven organizations that benefit Black communities. And, demand a public statement of commitment to reject all donations going forward.

If we are going to have any chance at achieving actual, significant change that truly saves Black lives from police brutality and helps Black communities, and seeing any redistribution of law enforcement funding toward life-saving programs like emergency housing, food assistance, and community-driven mental health, elected leadership MUST release their financial conflict of interest.

Imagine asking a Senator funded by the NRA to produce helpful legislation for reducing mass shootings, or a Governor funded by Facebook to produce online privacy protection policy. Ludicrous…right?

Our leadership must divest from law enforcement funding in order to serve our Black communities without bias. (Well, financial bias. And we’ll work on personal bias later.)

Email, call, and/or tweet at your federal, state, and local leadership (incl. city councils, aldermen, etc.), and tell them to donate any police union and law enforcement PAC donations to protester bail funds and community-driven organizations that help Black communities. And, tell them to publicly commit to rejecting these donations in the future, to ensure their obligation is to Black voters, not those who enact systemic violence against them.
