Today’s Action: National Day of Action this Sunday to #SaveSCOTUS

This Sunday, thousands of progressives around the country will gather in nearly every major city to protest Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh. What’s at stake, based on Kavanaugh’s extensive record: Roe v. Wade, voter rights, immigration rights, net neutrality, LGBTQ rights, gun safety…and the Russia investigation, in the midst of Trump’s former lawyer all but admitting complete and utter collusion, campaign finance law, and other crimes.

In the wake of a guilty plea by Michael Cohen, Trump’s longtime lawyer and fixer, which implicated the president as a co-conspirator in two campaign finance felonies, it would delegitimize our judiciary — and for that matter, the Senate — to allow Trump to reshape the Court before the investigation has concluded.

Although most of the Democratic caucus in the Senate has made strong statements opposing Kavanaugh, eight Democrats from primarily red states are still undecided and need to be reminded of Democratic values. Meanwhile, Republican so-called moderates Susan Collins (R-ME), Lisa Murkowsky (R-AK), and Jeff Flake (R-AZ) have NOT yet made statements that they will support Kavanaugh…so there’s still a chance to sway them.

The Unite for Justice National Day of Action arrives less than two weeks before Senate hearings are expected to begin. This may be our biggest chance to make the Senate listen.

A dangerous choice for the Supreme Court, Kavanaugh:

• Wrote that a President should be exempt from criminal investigation while in office…which many believe is precisely why Trump has chosen him
• Upheld discriminatory voter ID laws in South Carolina, blocking an estimated 80,000 people of color from voting, and is strongly opposed by the NAACP
• Opposes even the most common sense safeguards on semi-automatic weapons, calling any restriction unconstitutional
• A major threat to Roe v. Wade and all abortion rights
• Believes net neutrality violates internet providers’ freedom of speech and said he would rule any net neutrality regulations, even if they were laws passed by Congress

To sum up, he’s racist, trigger-happy, corporate-friendly judge who opposes the Trump-Russia investigation and was appointed by a president who broke the law to get where he is.
