Today’s Action: National Day of Mourning this week

A collective of progressive organizations have launched a National Day of Mourning this week to honor the massive loss of life during this pandemic, a stunning number approaching 100,000 dead. These events also serve to remind that these deaths were not inevitable, but a result of failed leadership that is still allowing this escalation to continue.

But unlike pre-pandemic activism, which focused on gathering in large groups, the events this week will include careful social distancing and small gatherings spread out over several days on or around today, May 20.

Plan and execute your National Day of Mourning in-person action this week at Republican Congressional offices, Trump-specific sites (including Trump donors), or public spaces. Follow Indivisible’s guidelines to ensure you, your fellow protestors, and all those around you remain safe and secure while creating maximum impact.

The event you plan can be unique – but Indivisible recommends highly visual and visceral symbols, like gravestones and body bags. Trump’s son, Eric Trump, is now revisiting Trump’s original strategy of calling the entire pandemic a Democratic hoax, so reminding our representatives, Trump’s business associates and donors, and the media of the VERY REAL tragedy happening in our country is essential.

But the most important rule is to stay safe. Gather your friends for a motorcade (everyone safely in their cars), designate specific volunteers to decorate cars while drivers stay inside with the windows rolled up, and choose one person in advance to be the public speaker outside the vehicle. With planning and coordination, there is no reason to contribute to the death toll while sending a message.

Plan a National Day of Mourning action this week at Republican Congressional offices, Trump’s business sites, Trump’s donor sites, and in public spaces. Be sure to follow the planning and social distancing guidelines (like using a motorcade) to ensure every participant’s safety!
