Today’s Action: Tell the House to prevent warrantless spying on internet searches

The House is expected to vote this week on a bipartisan amendment to limit the FBI’s ability to conduct vast warrantless searches on American citizens’ internet searches and browsing history. This important amendment will undo the unfettered access into our online lives that the FBI has had since October 2001, when Congress passed the PATRIOT Act and allowed the federal government to freely spy on its own citizens.

The bipartisan amendment has already seen strong support in the Senate, where it needed 60 in favor to pass but lost in the Senate by a single vote. It would have passed if any of these 12 Democrat and independents had voted “yea.” If the House passes it this week, those 12 (including at least one who plans to vote for it) will have another chance.

The vote is THIS WEEK. Call or email your Representative and tell them to pass the amendment cosponsored by Reps. Lofgren (D-CA) and Davidson (R-OH) to prohibit warrantless FBI searches of our internet and browsing history in the vote on the USA FREEDOM Authorization Act (H.R.6172).

And if your Senator voted NAY or didn’t vote on the Wyden-Daines amendment (similar language as the House amendment), send them your strong feedback.

This amendment is close to passing with clear bipartisan support. The House is a more favorable environment to win than the Senate, but the Senate has shown us that we cannot take anyone’s support for granted without serious pressure.

We must lean hard on the House to pass the Lofgren-Davidson amendment and protect us from relentless invasion of our private lives.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Representative and tell them to pass the amendment to the USA FREEDOM Authorization Act (H.R.6172) cosponsored by Reps. Lofgren (D-CA) and Davidson (R-OH) to prohibit the FBI from warrantless searches of our internet and browsing history.

If your Senator voted NAY or didn’t vote on the amendment, be sure to express your disapproval, since this will go back to the Senate if passed.
