Yes. Seriously.

Today’s Action: COVID relief is coming…but it could be way better. Make the call today.

Over a half a year after our last pandemic relief package, the Senate could vote as early as this week on a compromise deal before they adjourn for the year. And it’s a far cry from what House Democrats passed this spring.

The package is currently around $900 billion, a far cry from Democrats’ $3.4 and later $2.2 trillion proposals, and even lower than Republicans’ recent $1.1 trillion offer. So where are we at right now?

  • No stimulus checks. Republicans are refusing to fund another round of $1,200 aid to struggling families
  • A reduction of funding to states, localities, and tribal governments, $160 billion down from the $1 trillion marker in the Democrats’ HEROES Act…with part of that pitiful $160 billion intended to fund bloated law enforcement budgets

  • Unemployment insurance has been cut from the previous $600/week to $300/week, despite abysmally high unemployment numbers

  • Includes liability protections for corporations to continue pushing unsafe working conditions without fear of legal retribution from their at-risk employees

But the deal isn’t done and the vote hasn’t happened yet. This package can be better.

Call or email your Senators and demand comprehensive pandemic relief. We need: stimulus checks for families, strong state/local funding, boosted unemployment benefits, eviction protections and rent/mortgage relief, student loan relief…and no liability protections for irresponsible corporations.

In addition to the above… By January, 12 million renters will owe on rent and utilities, with an average of $5,850 in debt. If Congress doesn’t include an extension of the eviction moratorium, millions of families will find themselves newly homeless in the dead of winter and a raging pandemic.

And without proactive rental assistance, many of these families will have no hope in making up for lost rent even when their jobs do, hopefully, return. Especially if the unemployment insurance remains cut down and stimulus checks never arrive.

Senators, especially Republicans but also Democrats, need to keep hearing what American families actually, desperately need out of this agreement.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators and demand robust pandemic funding. Be specific – share what you or your family/community members specifically need.
