Today’s Action: Celebrate Labor Day by taking action for workers

This year’s Labor Day is going to look very different for most Americans – the barbecues and pool parties are mostly postponed for all those still trying to help minimize the spread of the virus.

But even this change, we hope, helps us reflect on the purpose of this day: to honor and respect the labor movement and our workers that keep this country moving in the face of national tragedy. Our essential workers have received floods of thanks (as they should), but not necessarily the actual protections or hazard pay they need and deserve. And as economies have reopened (and then shut down again), non-essential laborers have also been placed at great risk by corporate greed and Trumpian ego.

This actually isn’t new or unique to Trump’s presidency. The price of our country’s prosperity has often been at the expense of laborers, particularly the working class and poor, who hardly receive the benefits enjoyed by the middle and owning class even as they produce much of the actual wealth in our country.

We sincerely hope that this pandemic is shedding enough light on the failures of our government and corporations to take basic worker safety and livelihood into higher consideration than profit. And, we can help – by taking action today for workers everywhere.

Your Members of Congress are likely out of office today, but let’s fill their email inboxes and voicemails for the workday tomorrow. Take action for laborers everywhere by demanding the following:

  • Tell the Senate to pass the Heroes Act, which includes hazard pay, mandated safety precautions, and unemployment insurance for workers.
  • Tell the Senate to cosponsor and pass the S.851, the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act, to create a federal and employer workplace violence-prevention standard.
  • Tell the House to pass H.R. 6559, The COVID-19 Every Worker Protection Act of 2020 to provide temporary emergency safety standards for workers.

Whether you’re planning on a social-distanced day in the house or outdoors – or whether you’re working today – take a minute to make calls for laborers everywhere.
