Today’s Action: Tell your MoC’s to cosponsor the Neighbors Not Enemies Act

The Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 were a series of laws signed by President Adams, under the ‘justification’ of war, which would be considered solidly right wing by today’s standards: anti-immigrant, anti-protest, and rife with voter suppression.

All but one of these acts have since expired or been repealed…but one, the Alien Enemies Act (AEA) of 1798, remains to this day. The AEA gives authority to the president for determining how and if any foreign national in our country should be “apprehended, restrained, secured, and removed.”

Getting nervous yet? You should be – because the AEA is a choice weapon of Trump’s. He used it to justify the Muslim travel ban, which has been fully functional and in operation since 2018 and was expanded to 13 countries this past week.

Call or email your Members of Congress and tell them to cosponsor the Neighbors Not Enemies Act (H.R.5734) or introduce similar legislation in the Senate to repeal the xenophobic Alien Enemies Act of 1798. If they have already cosponsored, thank them and encourage them to keep pushing.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), herself a frequent target of Trump’s anti-immigrant, Islamophobic, racist, and sexist attacks, introduced the Neighbors Not Enemies Act. Omar was born and raised in Somalia, a country currently blocked from travel by Trump’s Muslim ban.

Shutting down the AEA means closing off one of Trump’s loopholes to legally justify his heinous deeds. Because, technically, some laws like the AEA do exist to support his choices to carry his xenophobia out to these extreme measures under the right circumstances. A dash of an 18th century law, a sprinkle of a right-leaning court, plus half a pound of Trump cooked under pressure makes a pretty nasty bowl of soup.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and urge them to cosponsor the Neighbors Not Enemies Act (H.R.5734) – or introduce similar language to the Senate – to fully repeal the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.

P.S. Did you see Trump rev up his racist base by complaining about South Korean film Parasite winning Best Picture at the Oscars this year? After you’ve called your MoC’s, stick it to Trump and please watch Parasite. And if it’s not your genre of choice, we also recommend the superb Chinese-American dramedy The Farewell, which didn’t make it to the Oscars this year because it was directed by a woman.
