The Trump Administration is going after immigrant children again. Just like Trump’s erratic cancellation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) last September and subsequent mutilation of the DREAM Act, the lives of children at our borders have become pawns in Trump’s horrific political chess game.
Earlier this month, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that he would seek “100% prosecution” for anyone entering the U.S. illegally, and separate parents from children instead of keeping them in detention centers together.
And he’s been doing it for months. Since October, 700 children (nearly 100 under the age of four) have been taken from their parents at the border with no plans to reunite them. Their parents are asylum seekers, running from unfathomable violence and political oppression in Central and South America…and now the United States has taken away their children.
For these children, separation from parents is only the beginning of their nightmare. Last year, Trump’s border police lost track of 1500 children placed in temporary homes — they still have not been found and are at grave risk of human trafficking.
Trump wants to use these unimaginably cruel tactics to scare off future immigrants and asylum seekers. But Department of Homeland Security is required by law to act in the best interests of children…once again proving that Trump believes he’s completely above the law.
He’s not.
