Today’s Action: Release jail and prison inmates to slow coronavirus

More than 70,000 imprisoned individuals have tested positive for the virus since the start of the pandemic. More than 700 have died. And the infection rates are increasing.

Though it’s not surprising, it is predictable. While many of us diligently hold out under extended stay-at-home mandates, those in prison or jail are forced to remain in cramped, crowded, and often unsanitary environments — conditions primed for the rapid spread of disease.

States must act NOW to thin out the prison and jail populations, to protect both those released and those who remain from this contagious virus.

Call or email your Governor and demand they lower your state’s jail and prison populations by drastically releasing those serving sentences for minor or non-violent crimes, especially the elderly, those who cannot afford cash bail, and anyone close to finishing their sentence as long as the pandemic is active.

Our prison and jail systems already have some of our most vulnerable citizens – predominantly Black and Hispanic men from lower socioeconomic background, and very much victims of justice systems with overtly racist sentencing procedures.

They’re also often responsible for providing their own hygiene supplies, including paying for their own soap, while only earning cents for hourly wages.

Prisoners lack the ability to advocate for themselves, to speak out and to gain media attention – meanwhile, these crowded institutions are feeling the full effects of coronavirus. On behalf of those without a voice, please raise yours today.

Email or call your Governor and ask them to protect inmates from coronavirus by drastically reducing the population of prisons and jails in your state. Recommend they release nonviolent prisoners who are close to the end of their sentence, especially the elderly and those being held because they cannot afford cash bail.
