Yes. Seriously.

7/23: Strengthen voter rights in honor of John Lewis

We lost a legend last week. Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) was a lifelong civil rights leader, the last living speaker at the March on Washington in 1963, whose skull was fractured by police in Selma on “Bloody Sunday,” and who led many of the lunch counter sit-ins and Freedom Rider bus protests that culminated in the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Lewis served in the House for over 30 years, fighting against poverty and gun violence while promoting education and health care. He was considered by many to be the conscience of Congress.

The freedoms Lewis fought for have been dramatically reduced in recent years. In 2013, the right-wing Supreme Court shut down key elements of the historic Voting Rights Act. Without these protections, the GOP has quickly reverted back to repressive practices that pre-date the Civil Rights Era, including: harsh voter I.D. laws that disproportionately affect voters of color and the poor, consolidating polling stations, purging voter rosters, shortening early voting periods, and just flat-out “losing” ballots of Black voters.

Now, during a global pandemic, we are witnessing the next logical step toward voter suppression, in the GOP’s factless smear campaign against a bolstered absentee voting and funding for USPS to keep voters and poll workers safe. If our primaries set any example, millions of disenfranchised voters will find their ballots uncounted.

It is grossly hypocritical for Republicans to honor Rep. John Lewis while carrying out the very systems of oppression he fought against. Heading into November’s election and well beyond, we call on Congress to return the voting protections lost in 2013 and strengthen them now in the face of this deadly virus.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators TODAY and demand they take the following actions to honor Rep. John Lewis’ legacy by protect voting rights for all:

  • Pass the Voting Rights Advancement Act of 2019, which would help to restore a key element lost from the original act
  • Pass the robust election protections and national vote-by-mail options to ensure safety and representation this November
  • Fund the United States Postal Service through the pandemic to ensure every ballot arrives on time

Thank you, Rep. John Lewis, for your lifetime of service. Rest in power.
