Today’s Action: Support stronger unions – pass the PRO Act
Labor unions have been the backbone of America since the Industrial Revolution in the late 1800’s. It’s unions we have to thank for safe working conditions, liveable wages, job benefits, the 40-hour work week and overtime, the minimum wage, weekends — and very often, the lack of unions is to blame when those values are missing from a place of employment.
The power of working people truly does lie in the power to organize — and with healthcare rights quickly disappearing and a president who makes no secret of prioritizing corporate interests, it’s more important than ever that we support and participate in organized labor.
That’s why Democrats in both the House and Senate have introduced the Protect the Right to Organize Act (PRO Act), a bill shore up organizing rights for the workers of America.
Call or email your Members of Congress and urge them to support workers rights by cosponsoring the PRO Act (H.R.2474 / S.1306). If they have already cosponsored (House/Senate), thank them!
The PRO Act supports workers by:
-
Banning employers from forcing workers to sign away the ability to organize
-
Removing limitations on unions supporting other unions on strike, thereby allowing workers to move in solidarity with one another
-
Prohibiting companies from forcing employees to attend mandatory anti-union activities or meetings
-
Requiring companies begin negotiations within 10 days of a strike
-
Prohibiting businesses from permanently replacing striking workers
The fact is, unions are the single best tool workers have to combat income inequality, protect their rights, and fight for their own prosperity. There isn’t even a close second. But our country’s laws currently place corporate interests much higher than workers rights to organize….which means it’s time for us to organize around this bill.
Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and ask them to organize for workers rights by supporting and cosponsoring the PRO Act (H.R.2474 / S.1306). If they’ve already signed on (House/Senate), thank them!
