Today’s Action: Demand Congress boost our healthcare systems to address the pandemic

Trump wants to reopen the economy, and many states are following suit – only to shut back down again from surges in infection rates.

So in order to have an open economy while battling this pandemic, two former federal health officials (one from President Obama’s administration and one from Trump’s) are leading the call for a big boost to our public health system to get our pandemic response on track – specifically, funding for contact tracing and self-isolating.

Call or email your Members of Congress and tell them to provide funding for expanding the following:

  1. $12 billion to expand our contact tracing workforce. Contact tracing has been used to great success in other countries to stop the spread. Every new infection is registered as a “case” with caseworkers who confirm the patient is able to self-isolate. Caseworkers then contact anyone with whom the patient has been in proximity. Those contacts are also asked to self-isolate and/or monitor symptoms.
  2. $30 billion in income for those voluntarily self-isolating. Not everyone who has been asked to self-isolate after contact with a confirmed case can actually afford to take 14 days off work. But they might if provided an income of $50/day during that time. We must make the choice to stop the spread as financially feasible as possible.
  3. $4.5 billion for self-isolation lodging. So you’ve been exposed, but you either live with other people or you don’t have secure housing access to begin with? Our nation’s hotels are mostly vacant at the moment and would be easy places to self-isolate…if folks could afford the rooms. Our government can and should provide that funding.

Trump and his Republican cronies in the Senate have refused to do more than the bare minimum to stop the spread of this virus. We can’t win this by ignoring the problem – over 132,000 Americans are now dead. We need financial support (the HEROES Act remains untouched in the Senate) and robust public health funding.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and demand they provide public health funding for contact tracing and self-isolating (read them those numbers above).
