Today’s Action: Tell Congress to cancel rent

We were already experiencing an affordable housing crisis before the pandemic destroyed our economy and eliminated millions of jobs. And right now, if you’re a renter struggling to make ends meet, your likelihood of getting evicted depends on limited local government emergency measures and how soon you’re able to get back to earning money…even as the second round of state shutdowns has begun.

Some cities have placed temporary moratoriums on evictions – but the moment those moratoriums lift, the full backlog of rent is still due — often with late fees. Other cities have limited landlord abilities to raise rent – which is marginally helpful IF you can make your current amount. Some cities have attempted rent-relief…but their capacities and efforts have fallen far short of the actual need.

Call or email your Members of Congress and demand broad rent relief policy for the duration of this pandemic.

Direct response from Congress on our housing crisis is long overdue – because if housing were actually affordable, it might be easier for renters to save up for the unexpected rainy day (aka unprecedented global pandemic).

Pre-pandemic, one in four Americans spent over 50% of their income for housing. And this isn’t just a “low-income” problem; 27% of renters who earn between $45,000 and $75,000 are considered “cost-burdened” because more than 30% of their income goes to rent.

Take these numbers and slap a multi-month economic crisis with no clear end in sight? Local governments do not have the capacity to fully address this problem. Congress must step in.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Members of Congress and tell them to cancel rent for struggling Americans. As long as a pandemic has shut down our economy, we need immediate housing solutions for those impacted the hardest.
