Today’s Action: We still need the Violence Against Women Act

This past February, funding for the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) lapsed, stalled over Republican obstruction in Congress and ultimately left out of the funding bill which re-opened the government after Trump’s shutdown.

The House passed a funding bill in April with 33 Republicans adding their support to Democrats. And it’s a good bill: it eliminates the “boyfriend loophole” by expanding the ban of firearm purchases for spouses convicted of abuse to include dating partners as well.

But Republicans in the Senate led by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have heard complaints from their significant other, the National Rifle Association, over this attempt to, you know, protect victims from violent and dangerous partners, and so the bill has stalled.

Call or email your Senators and demand they pass the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019 (H.R.1585), which reauthorizes previous funding and further protects women from violent dating partners by eliminating the “boyfriend loophole.”

The VAWA was enacted in 1994, and in the last 25 years, has provided abused, battered, and stalked women with vital support networks: rape crisis centers, shelters, legal assistance, counseling, and more. Though violence against women remains far too common, in the years since VAWA’s inception, intimate partner violence has declined by an astounding 72% and sexual assault against women has dropped by nearly 60%.

Until recently, a bipartisan effort was underway in the Senate to build a VAWA funding bill that Mitch McConnell wouldn’t ignore. But those efforts have fallen apart, and Republicans are now attempting to move forward with a version that pleases the NRA.

But we don’t want the NRA’s VAWA bill, which would happily keep firearms in the hands of as many violent, abusive men as it can get. Senate Democrats must push for the House’s bill, and Republicans must hear from their constituents to stop valuing the life of a gun organization over the lives of their voters.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators and tell them to take up the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2019 (H.R.1595), which includes an elimination of the “boyfriend loophole” – and not a weaker, NRA-approved version of VAWA funding.
