Today’s Action: Tell the Senate to pass universal background checks and expand waiting periods on gun purchases!

Last night in Boulder, Colorado, ten people were killed in the seventh mass shooting in seven days in the US. This is a uniquely American problem, and the solutions are clear.

It has been 27 years since Congress passed meaningful gun safety legislation, and thousands of people have died as a result of this gross inaction. But a few weeks ago, House Democrats passed two bills to institute universal background checks and extend waiting periods on purchases.

With Democrats in control of what comes to the floor, Senate Republicans will be forced to finally answer whether they’re for or against these common sense and incredibly popular safety precautions, rather than hiding behind the excuses around more controversial measures.

Call or email your Senators and tell them to support universal background checks and expanded waiting periods on gun purchases!

An improved background check system might have prevented the 2015 white supremacy-inspired mass shooting at a historic Black church in Charleston, SC…ditto to the 2017 Sutherland Springs shooting that killed 25. A Washington State study found that 1-in-10 online gun purchases were made by individuals who would have been otherwise prevented by background checks due to rape, domestic violence, and other charges.

And an enforced ten-day waiting period may have cooled the Atlanta shooter’s impulses, or given time for family and community to become alerted to his plan and help prevent it.

Although these laws would not be the “final answer” in gun safety, there is no question that they would help. An improved process is a first of many needed steps to not only help prevent future mass shootings…but save thousands of lives lost each year that never make the headlines.

Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators and demand their support of universal backgrounds checks and expanded waiting periods. Tell them that gun safety must be a high priority for reducing the epidemic of bloodshed in our country, and these changes are a popular and common sense step in the right direction.

PS: Unless ten Republicans come on board with all Democrats, these bills won’t pass the filibuster. So remind your Senators that they must support overturning the filibuster to make any meaningful change in gun safety – and that’s what you want to see!

PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition demanding Republicans join Democrats to pass common sense gun reform, and be sure to follow OD Action on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
