Today’s action: Protect LGBTQ+ communities from discrimination — pass the Equality Act!

Today is the final day of Pride Month. And while the pandemic has certainly adjusted many of the traditional ways in which we have celebrated, supported, and protested for LGBTQ+ communities and rights during Pride, in other ways 2020 looks exactly the same as previous years…because many LGBTQ+ individuals still live without legal protection from discrimination.

That may come as a surprise if you saw the recent landmark Supreme Court decision that protects LGBTQ+ Americans in the workplace. But sadly, this victory is only part of the story.

In most states, home to about 50% of LGBTQ+ Americans, people can still be denied housing or lodging, or even kicked out of their home for even the perception that they are gay or transgender.

A year ago, the House passed the Equality Act to provide anti-discrimination laws at the federal level for sexual orientation and gender identity, filling a major gap left by the Civil Rights Act of 1964. But the Equality Act has been gathering dust on Mitch McConnell’s desk ever since.

70% of Americans support the Equality Act, and the Senate’s inaction is appalling. Tell your Senators to co-sponsor and support the Equality Act of 2019 and DEMAND a vote. If they have already cosponsored, thank them! If your state lacks legal protections, follow with a call to your Governor and state legislators!

The threat is very real: two-thirds of LGBTQ+ Americans report experiencing discrimination in their lifetimes. The protests for Black lives the past few weeks have particularly highlighted the heartbreaking rates of violence against Black trans women. It is a sobering current state as we also reflect on the legacy of activist Marsha P. Johnson, the Black trans woman instrumental in starting the Stonewall Riots 51 years ago which Pride celebrates, and whose death remains under investigation.

The Equality Act won’t eliminate all hate crimes and discrimination — but it will certainly prevent some, and provide the LGBTQ+ community with immediate protections, recourse, and justice against intolerance.

No more delays. Email or call (202.224.3121) your Senators and demand they co-sponsor and pass the Equality Act of 2019. Tell them federal anti-discrimination laws for LGBTQ+ individuals are decades overdue. If they have already cosponsored, thank them! If your state has no legal protections, make the call to your Governor and state legislators!
