Today’s Action: Pass the PRO Act and protect the right to unionize!
Corporate fatcats and their corrupt cronies in Congress have been relentlessly trying to stamp out worker power and crush American unions for decades — and certain Senators are still holding up the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act that would provide more equitable conditions for all workers.
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics recently released their 2021 union membership report, which reported that union membership dropped by nearly a quarter million workers — meaning the addition of 4.2 million pandemic recovery jobs didn’t grow the number of workers in unions. Corporate America’s desperate efforts to get everyone back to work has reminded workers everywhere they’re worth more than low pay, low benefits, long hours, and emotional abuse from their bosses.
The fact is, when unions thrive, American workers and families thrive. It’s that simple.
But unionization isn’t easy for anyone — companies like Amazon, Starbucks, and Kelloggs have continued to implement new levels of union-busting tactics while workers across the country fight for better pay and better workplace conditions. Though it passed through the House last year, Senators are still holding up the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act and delaying more equitable conditions for all workers.
It is horrifying to see just how badly big corporations treat their workers — just look at the recent tornado outbreak in the Midwest, when Amazon reportedly prohibited workers from returning home, resulting in multiple deaths. A unionized warehouse might have saved lives.
Everyone should have the right to organize their workplace and join a union, but fewer than 11% of American workers are presently unionized. Every worker deserves a living wage and better working conditions – we need the PRO Act to protect and guarantee the right to union membership and democratized workplaces.
Call (202-224-3121) or write your Senators and demand they support the PRO Act! Send them this petition with almost 40,000 signatures in favor of its passage!
PS — Please don’t forget to sign the petition to stop the Florida bill that would erase LGBTQ+ history from classrooms, and be sure to follow OD Action on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.
