Today’s Action: Demand Senate support for Elizabeth Warren’s anti-corruption bill
Unlike Trump’s feckless campaign chant, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is *actually* draining the swamp. Earlier this month, Warren called the Trump era “the most nakedly corrupt leadership this nation has seen in our lifetimes.” And now, she’s going after the exact issues that have defined the current administration as such, in a newly unveiled anti-corruption bill.
Warren’s bill would require presidential candidates and all federal officeholders to release their tax returns, and place any assets with a potential conflict of interest in a blind trust and sold off…a direct response to Trump’s blanket refusal to do either, raising major alarms that continue to sound.
But she hasn’t stopped there. Warren’s bill also includes lifetime bans on the president, vice-president, Cabinet members and congressional lawmakers from becoming lobbyists after their appointments. And it bars federal judges from accepting gifts or payments that might sway their rulings…because apparently that’s a thing that’s happening right now.
We need this bill.
The bill is a complete reworking of how both private and corporate money flows in Washington, and lists nearly 50 changes, including restricting lawmakers from individual stock trades (hello GOP insider trading.)
Warren said it best: “People don’t trust their government to do right because they think government works for the rich, the powerful and the well-connected, and not for the American people. And here’s the kicker: They’re right.”
We’d love to be wrong. And this bill might actually make it possible.
